Data analyst CV example

By the JobberNest team · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Data analyst roles attract many career changers from bootcamps and online courses. That's fine, but it means a certificate alone no longer stands out. What does: a question you answered with data, the tools you used, and the decision someone made because of it.

If you don't have analyst experience yet, use projects with real or public data (for example, from the National Bureau of Statistics or the World Bank) and describe them like jobs.

Data analyst CV sample

Kelechi Eze

Data Analyst (SQL, Power BI, Python)

Abuja · kelechi.eze@example.com · portfolio: example.com

Profile

Data analyst with two years in retail and a background in economics. I build the weekly sales dashboards our managers run the business on, write SQL against a 40-million-row sales table, and found the stock-out pattern that led to a new reorder rule.

Experience

Data Analyst · A supermarket chain, Abuja

Mar 2024 – present

  • Built Power BI dashboards for sales, stock and margin used weekly by 18 store managers.
  • Found that stock-outs on 40 fast-moving lines peaked on Mondays; the new reorder rule cut those stock-outs by about a quarter.
  • Replaced a 3-hour manual Excel report with a scheduled SQL query and Power BI refresh.

Operations Assistant · Same company

Oct 2022 – Feb 2024

  • Kept daily sales and stock reports in Excel for six stores.
  • Taught myself SQL and Power BI and moved into the analyst role internally.

Education

B.Sc. Economics · Nnamdi Azikiwe University

2015 – 2019

Google Data Analytics Certificate · Coursera

2023

Skills

SQL (PostgreSQL, SQL Server) · Power BI · Excel (Power Query, pivot tables) · Python (pandas) · Data cleaning · Dashboard design · A/B test basics · Presenting findings

Sample CV. The person, contact details and employers are fictional (schools are named for realism); write yours only from your own experience.

What recruiters look for

  • Tools named exactly: SQL, Excel, Power BI or Tableau, Python or R.
  • A finding that led to a decision, not just a dashboard you built.
  • Data size and sources: how many rows, which systems.
  • A portfolio link with two or three good projects.
  • Clear explanations: analysts present to people who don't read SQL.

Tips for a stronger data analyst CV

  1. 1

    Lead with a finding

"Built dashboards" is common. "Found the pattern behind Monday stock-outs" gets an interview.

  2. 2

    Make the portfolio easy

For each project: the question, the data, one chart and the answer, all readable in two minutes.

  3. 3

    Don't list ten certificates

One or two relevant certificates are plenty. Projects and experience matter more.

Questions people ask

Can I get a data analyst job without experience?

Yes, through internships, internal moves and junior roles, but you need projects that show you can work with messy data and explain what you found.

Should I learn Python or Power BI first?

For most analyst jobs in Nigeria, SQL and Excel come first, then Power BI. Python helps for more technical roles.
