Graduate trainee interview questions and answers
By the JobberNest team · Reviewed 3 November 2026
Graduate trainee programmes at Nigerian banks, FMCG companies, oil and gas firms and consultancies usually run in stages: an online aptitude test, an assessment centre or group exercise, and a final panel interview. Each stage looks for slightly different things.
Panels know you have little work experience. They're judging potential: how you think, how you work with others, and how much you want this particular career.
The questions
1.Why did you apply for this graduate programme?
What they're looking for: Whether you understand the programme and the industry, or applied to every scheme.
How to answer: Mention what's special about this programme (rotations, training, the business it feeds into) and link it to something you've already done, such as a course, SIWES or NYSC.
2.Tell us about a time you showed leadership.
What they're looking for: Leadership potential, even without a job title.
How to answer: Use a student, NYSC, CDS, church, mosque or community example. Show how you got people to act, not just that you held a title.
3.Describe a time you failed.
What they're looking for: Resilience and learning.
How to answer: Pick a real but recoverable failure: a failed course, a project that went wrong, a missed deadline. Spend most of the answer on what you learned and changed.
4.How do you handle working under pressure?
What they're looking for: Trainee programmes are intense. They want evidence you cope.
How to answer: Describe a period with competing deadlines, such as final exams with a project and a part-time job, and how you planned and prioritised.
5.What do you know about our company?
What they're looking for: Preparation and genuine interest.
How to answer: Know their main products or services, roughly how big they are, a recent piece of news, and their competitors. Read their website and annual report summary.
6.Sell this pen to me.
What they're looking for: Common in sales and FMCG trainee interviews: confidence and listening.
How to answer: Don't start by describing the pen. Ask the interviewer what they need it for, then show how the pen meets that need, and ask for the sale.
7.Would you be willing to relocate?
What they're looking for: Many programmes post trainees anywhere in Nigeria.
How to answer: Answer honestly. If you're flexible, say so with enthusiasm. If you have a real constraint, raise it now rather than after an offer.
Questions to ask the interviewer
- How are trainees placed after the programme ends?
- What do the most successful trainees do differently?
- How much of the programme is classroom training and how much is on the job?
Tips
- 1
In group exercises, include others
Assessors watch how you work with the group, not how loudly you speak. Bring quieter people in, keep time and help the group reach a decision.
- 2
Practise aptitude tests
Numerical, verbal and logical reasoning tests are timed. Practise with timed tests until the format feels familiar.
- 3
Keep your documents ready
Degree certificate or statement of result, NYSC certificate or letter, and ID. Some panels check them on the day.
Questions people ask
What class of degree do graduate programmes need?
Many ask for a Second Class Upper, and some accept a Second Class Lower. Check each advert, because the requirements differ.
How should I prepare for an assessment centre?
Practise aptitude tests, prepare short STAR stories, read about the company and be ready for a group exercise and a short presentation.
