Bank interview questions and answers

By the JobberNest team · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Bank interviews in Nigeria mix general questions with banking knowledge and, for sales roles, your ability to bring in deposits. Expect at least one question about a recent banking topic, such as cashless policy, digital banking or fraud.

Panels want people who are accurate, honest, good with customers and comfortable with targets.

The questions

  1. 1.What do you know about our bank?

What they're looking for: Preparation, and whether you understand how the bank makes money.

How to answer: Know its size (tier one or two), its main products, its digital app, a recent result or campaign, and its main competitors.

  2. 2.How would you mobilise deposits if we hired you?

What they're looking for: For relationship and marketing roles: do you have a plan and a network?

How to answer: Name realistic targets: schools, churches, mosques, markets, SMEs or salary accounts from companies you know. Explain how you would find them, follow up and keep them.

  3. 3.A customer is shouting at you in the banking hall. What do you do?

What they're looking for: Calm, empathy and process.

How to answer: Stay calm, move them somewhere quieter if possible, listen without interrupting, apologise for the experience, explain what you'll do and by when, then follow up.

  4. 4.What is KYC and why does it matter?

What they're looking for: Compliance awareness.

How to answer: Know Your Customer: verifying a customer's identity and details (for example ID, BVN, address) before opening an account, to prevent fraud and money laundering. Mention that it protects both the bank and customers.

  5. 5.You notice a colleague has a cash shortage and asks you to cover it. What do you do?

What they're looking for: Integrity. This is a test.

How to answer: Refuse politely and report it through the right channel, usually your supervisor. Explain that hiding shortages puts everyone at risk.

  6. 6.What do you think about the cashless policy?

What they're looking for: Awareness of the banking environment and the ability to give a balanced view.

How to answer: Give both sides: convenience, lower cash-handling costs and transparency, against network failures, fraud risk and customers who rely on cash. Say how banks can help customers adapt.

  7. 7.How do you work towards targets?

What they're looking for: Drive and planning.

How to answer: Explain how you break a target into weekly actions and track them. Give an example from sales, NYSC, school or a business you ran.

Questions to ask the interviewer

  • What does a typical day look like in this role?
  • How is performance measured in the first year?
  • What training do new staff get?

Tips

  1. 1

    Read the bank's latest news

A quick look at the bank's recent results, campaigns and app updates gives you something specific to say.

  2. 2

    Dress formally

Banks still expect corporate wear at interview.

  3. 3

    Know basic terms

Current versus savings account, BVN, KYC, AML, POS, NIP transfers and overdrafts come up often.

Questions people ask

Do banks test candidates before interviews?

Many do: online aptitude tests (numerical, verbal, logical) for graduate trainee and entry roles.

Is it true that marketing roles have deposit targets from day one?

Often, yes. Ask about targets and support at interview so you know what you're signing up for.
