Customer service interview questions and answers

By the JobberNest team · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Customer service interviews are often partly practical: a role-play with an angry customer, a typing test or a short written reply. The interviewer is checking how you sound and what you do, as much as what you say.

The questions

  1. 1.What does good customer service mean to you?

What they're looking for: Your attitude to customers.

How to answer: Solving the customer's problem quickly, keeping them informed, and leaving them feeling respected, even when the answer is no. Add a short example.

  2. 2.Tell me about a difficult customer you handled.

What they're looking for: Calm under pressure and a real process.

How to answer: Use STAR. Show that you listened, apologised for the experience, fixed or escalated the problem, and followed up.

  3. 3.How do you handle several customers waiting at once?

What they're looking for: Prioritising and keeping people informed.

How to answer: Acknowledge everyone waiting, deal with urgent cases first, give honest waiting times, and ask for help if the queue grows.

  4. 4.What would you do if you didn't know the answer to a customer's question?

What they're looking for: Honesty and resourcefulness.

How to answer: Tell them you'll find out, check the knowledge base or ask a colleague, and get back to them by an agreed time.

  5. 5.How do you deal with a customer who wants a refund the policy doesn't allow?

What they're looking for: Balancing policy and empathy.

How to answer: Explain the policy clearly and kindly, offer any alternative you can, and escalate if the case is unusual.

  6. 6.Are you comfortable working shifts and weekends?

What they're looking for: Many service roles run long hours.

How to answer: Answer honestly. If you are, say so; if you have limits, state them clearly.

Questions to ask the interviewer

  • What are the main reasons customers contact you?
  • How do you measure agent performance?
  • What tools does the team use?

Tips

  1. 1

    Smile on the phone

It sounds odd, but people hear it. In phone interviews, sit up and smile when you speak.

  2. 2

    Prepare for role-play

Practise a scenario with a friend playing an angry customer: listen, apologise, solve, confirm.

Questions people ask

Is there a typing test?

Often for chat and email roles. Around 40 to 50 words per minute with good accuracy is a common bar.
